Description
Greenseams® Program Interns assists the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) in protecting wetlands, local waterways, and Lake Michigan through land stewardship of sites enrolled in the MMSD Greenseams Program. The Greenseams program is a unique approach to floodwater management in which properties with hydric features such as wetlands, riverine corridors, and hydric soils are permanently protected through land acquisition and conservation easements. To date, >5,800 acres have been enrolled in the Greenseams program and >2,300 acres are owned by MMSD. The interns will assist in managing Greenseams sites to maximize the floodwater management, soil quality, wildlife habitat, and biodiversity benefits they provide. Interns will learn about habitat management and restoration through hands-on implementation of land stewardship activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Greenseams® Interns will assist the Land Stewardship Coordinator and other MMSD staff with implementation of land stewardship activities, site assessments, monitoring, ecological inventories, and conservation planning on Greenseams properties. Approximately eighty percent of the interns time will be spent in the field controlling invasive plant species using mechanical, manual, and chemical methods, conducting site evaluations, completing flora and fauna inventories, monitoring, mapping, and related restoration activities. The remainder of the time will be spent in the office completing desktop assessments, preparing ArcGIS maps, and assisting in the preparation conservation and restoration plans.
Requirements
One to two years of college or participation in a technical program related to biology, ecology, plant identification, natural resource management, or a related field; or considerable work experience in landscaping, forestry, conservation, or ecological land management and maintenance. Must be willing to conduct physically strenuous labor outdoors in all weather conditions over rough terrain, be open to learning new skills, and be able to effectively communicate with a diverse audience. A valid driver's license and a good driving record at the time of application, during the selection process, and throughout the internship are required.

This 12-week summer internship is full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:00 A.M - 4:30 P.M
