What Your Job Will Be LikeWe are seeking an Intern Year Round - Technical Undergrad to join our team.
The Nuclear Waste Disposal Research and Analysis Department at Sandia National Laboratories (Albuquerque, New Mexico) has an opening for a highly qualified undergraduate student for year round, onsite experiments. Under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists, the selected student will perform cementitious material preparation, fabrication, testing and analysis.
On any given day, you might be called on to:
- Formulate, mix, and cast cementitious material samples.
- Execute sample preparation techniques such as cutting, grinding, and polishing.
- Perform chemical synthesis/treatment of clays, cement phases, or other minerals.
- Conduct materials performance testing following relevant ASTM standards.
- Perform analytical work on solid samples using equipment such as an optical microscope, Keyence, SEM, XRF or XRD.
- Perform literature search and review.
- Make figures to present analytical data.
- Conduct work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Present results at meetings or conferences.
Salary Range
At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
- Currently attending and enrolled full time in a related accredited undergraduate program
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
- Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship
Note: If you have not earned a HS diploma or equivalent, please apply to a high school intern position.
Qualifications We Desire
- Ability to work onsite at the Sandia Albuquerque location.
- Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, material science, chemistry, or a related field.
- Experience working in a chemistry laboratory.
- Familiarity with analytical equipment.
- Knowledge of Microsoft office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Familiarity with cement fabrication and material characterization.

The Nuclear Waste Disposal Research and Analysis Department performs research, development and demonstration (RD&D) for the safe management and disposition of used nuclear fuel and/or high-level nuclear wastes from either commercial nuclear reactors or nuclear wastes produced by defense activities. RD&D covers multiple science and engineering disciplines and includes technologies critical to the solution of nuclear waste management problems. Performance assessment; decision analysis; chemical, physical, thermal and hydrologic process modeling; as well as environmental, chemical and low-level radioactive chemistry experiments are central to the departments' activities and capabilities.

Security Clearance
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
